Occlusal Splints & Tooth Grinding

GRIND MUCH?

What is it and what are my options?

Occlusion is the way our teeth come together as we bite and an improper bite can cause the jaw joint (Temporo Mandibular Joint or TMJ) to dysfunction.  TMJ dysfunction often presents in the form of headaches, facial muscle pain and restrictions in the jaw joint.

Sometimes, a person grinds or clenches their teeth together, called ‘bruxing’.   Most people are not aware of this condition as it generally occurs at night whilst sleeping.  The pressure resulting from bruxing can cause cracking, breaking or abrading of the teeth.  It can also cause generalised aching of the dentition, particularly on waking.

TMJ pain and tooth grinding are relatively common issues.

An Occlusal splint can be made to relieve pain and to prevent tooth damage due to grinding.  These splints are usually worn at night and cover the teeth of either the upper or lower jaw.
